    24 Valve E30 Automatic

Okay so I am starting to seriously think about a 24 valve swap. I know I want to do it, but my problem is transmission. I am not ready yet to engineer a crazy solenoid powered clutch setup, nor do I feel comfortable using one at the moment.

So who here has any experience with a 24 valve E30 AUTOMATIC? I would rather not use the 4HP22, but mine does not slip at all unless it is in the morning and it is not warmed up yet (then it slips a little).

E36 M3 automatic 5 speed would be nice! lol but I likely cant afford one. What do the e36 autos have on the 4Hp22?

I wouldn't swap a 24 valve into an autotragic. Not saying it won't be fun, but it won't be as much fun(this is based off of my opinion). And if you are going through the trouble anyway, you might as well just do a tranny swap too. It's easy enough to take the transmission out with the engine. And learn how to drive a stick. <--Life skill right there.

He only has 5 toes so he can't drive stick

As far as 24V in an automatic, the trouble you face is the fact that the transmission rotates 10 degrees so you'd have to figure out a way to mod the gear selector.

        Two good points right there.

M54 with the ZF streptronic unit? Custom mounts to orient it properly?

Has anyone ever successfully run a steptronic system in a swap? That would make automatic a bit more appealing ;)

Maybe you should sort out the rest of your car before you jump into an engine swap? the M20 is a reliable engine with plenty of power for a DD, especially for a new driver. Juuuust my .02.

Get your car sorted out, sell it for ~$3000 or whatever its worth, spend what you would have spent on a swap ~$2000, and throw in another $1000 on top of it and just buy an E36 M3 automatic.

Not trying to kill any dreams, but I honestly think the project would be a little overwhelming.

                      This is true.
We don't know what you are ready to take on and this seems like it would be a little too much.

It would be a bit much. I admit, and it would likely take me FOREVER. But that bimmerforums guy really gave me some inspiration.

So you're going to buy an engine from someone with 100k+ miles on it, and hope for the best?

Not the best thing to do. Unless your M20 needs a bottom end rebuild which ultimately requires the motor being pulled, it's useless.
