In Australia we're very lucky to have the Euro spec E36s and all our M52 engines are alloy block. I've driven iron block and alloy block cars back to back and you certainly do notice the 22kg difference at the front of the car, even when the iron block engined cars have better suspension in them.
M54s are a little heavier than M52 alloy motors due to dual vanos and cast iron cylinder liners.Leo.
