24v help (not a compatibility question)

I just picked up this s52 already swapped to obd1, but I'm still a 24v noob and need some insight.

    1. Found some oil in the coil pack's, mainly cylinders 4 and 5. This is probably a valve cover gasket right?

    2. Also there are two harnesses for two separate ecu's? is this normal?

    3. Various hoses/cables missing, anything that can't be deleted?

    Thanks.

After the motor gets a refresh, I'm going to use my current G240 with an m20 flywheel with a heavy duty clutch. Also going to use my 4.10 lsd until it explodes 8).

You're going to break that transmission. Upgrade to a getrag 260 or better.

      2. One of the connectors is for an automatic transmission. Trace that harness and you can remove a lot of wires.

        1. Short answer is yes.
Looks like you'll be needing an e34 oil pan too.

If you don't know what you're talking about, then I advise not to say it. A decent amount of people including myself are running g240's with 24v swaps and are having no issues at all.

            Why?

I'm running my s50 with my g240 and 4.10 LSD with no issues. Hauls ass too.

I've busted 2 G240 transmissions barely pushing anything through them.

They weren't instant but they both eventually grenaded. What do you expect for a gear box originally designed for a SOHC 90hp 4 banger.

Some people might get lucky but I wouldn't be caught dead with a G240 behind anything more powerful than a M42.

Even more so if you have intentions of doing any kind of FI. Over 300hp and they begin to eat themselves up.

Lol I don't know what i'm talking about? I'm not sure if you're trolling or serious. Getrag 240 is the cheap way out. Do it right the first time and you wont have to pull the motor out again in 3 months to install a getrag 260 or zf.

Fact: Swiss ran a g240 on his Z3 swap ( m44-M52) changed out 3 things only.

                    front sway bar
                    front struts

Everything else was original to the car and I drove it a year before I traded it for an e46. Everyone thought that car was a beast.... until now.

To be honest ive never run one behind a 24v swap. I have a customer that has one behind a M52 thats had a few clutch issues but trans is fine. I have however blown up alot of G250s...

if I find a spare zf i'll pick it up. but what clutch should I choose if I got the g240? should I pick up a different clutch if I were to use a zf? also what's with the whole two ecu thing? is it a harness for something else?

Have you ever run one behind a 24v? Thought so. I've ran one for the past 6,000 miles (which I hit today) without a single issue with loads of abuse. There is an m42 powered e30 running boost with over 300whp which started having issues with the transmission, but this is a strict track car which has just about everything upgraded and the tranny being the only weak point. Hartge_H27 on this board is a G240 behind his supercharged s52 with no issues for a few years now.

Lol all of that is invalid as it was still designed and used for a 4cyl power plant. Sure some may get lucky and not blow their trans up after a couple thousand miles, but theres a reason why they put the getrag 260/zf behind the I6's and not the 240. And actually i do have all the parts to install it onto my motor and everything, just changed my mind as I would rather it be done right. Just man up and put your big boy pants on and install a real transmission so you wont have to do it twice. Thats what everything in the automotive world works around...doing it right, the first time.

And the horsepower isn't what breaks it, its the torque load that the I6's provide that really doesnt sit well with them. And a s52 has more Tq than a 300hp m42 all day. And if it was tracked and broke even more reason to see the light and upgrade, cause your not slamming gears and clutch kicking daily like me ...its all about being spot on and smooth at the track. So I still rest my case, Op's s52 WILL break that trans if he doesn't grandpa around in it.

Guys relax, I'm not a track/street racer and won't be launching it at every light. My current 240 has no grinding issues and works fine. If in fact it blows, I can just drop the transmission and install the other no biggie. I need an e36 driveshaft anyway so hopefully it'll have a ZF transmission with it. This also is a long term project and will gather all parts necessary in time.

On another note, which flywheel/clutch combo do you guys advise?
