    Modifying/shortening Ebay Supersprint rep headers

So the M50 is back out of the car, and I'm starting to piece together the new exhaust system in my head. One thing I've definitely noticed about these headers used on an E30 with the 24V swap is that one of the pipes (the one closer to the middle of the car) hangs down significantly lower than the other. And that pipe that is a bit lower scrapes and hits on everything I drive over.

Before I send these off to be ceramic coated, I'm planning on cutting the tube right where it starts to sweep up toward the motor from under the car, and taking about about 1 - 1 1/2" of material and welding it back together, making the pipe hug the underside of the body a little more.

I'm just curious if anyone else has done this, and what your results were?

I'm just curious if you're ever gonna move that thread slacker.

I usually just see people cutting them equally right before the right side steps down to 1.75" and then welding flanges on, It looks to take much of the angle out of it.

I would be extremely careful in the operation, as Ebay headers are made of the lowest quality stainless steel you can get your hands on. They are also thin as paper, which greatly increases the risk of blowing through while welding.

I was planning on cutting them off right there and then having the Y right at that spot, and doing a VBand clamp there.

Planning on going with this Y: http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts...0A2266063.aspx

Fred, I know they're pretty thin, that's why I'm having them inside/outside ceramic coated. I think I'll just do as I'm planning above.

I used that Y pipe and I had to move it a few inches back to morge it onto the headers as the spacing is way off.

Maybe I'd just be better off making my own, then.

I highly recommend that, or try a Flowmaster one like E30Polak used. Same spacing. Magnaflow is way off.

I just ordered the Flowmaster one, it was only $10 more than the Magnaflow, and the guy at Jeg's gave me free shipping.

So I got the Flowmaster Y today, and it looks great, the inlet spacing looks dead on.

I had another thought, what about heating up the bend of that pipe that hangs slightly too low, and bending it up (toward the body) at bit? It wouldn't take much of a bend at all, just enough to get enough clearance from it. Thoughts?

Don't see why that wouldn't work, it's kind of tricky to do with the headers in the car though

They're not in the car, they're out, along with the whole engine. My plan was to temp mount them to the head, see about how much lower that one pipe sits than the other, and then heat/bend that pipe up just enough to get some more clearance out of it, before I have them ceramic coated. I think I'm also going to shim the motor up just a bit on that side.
