    Crankcase vent questions

    1. Where does the oil drain drain to in the e34 m50 factory configuration? See the house #5 below, where does that go to? The pic after that is the setup on the s52 e36 where it clearly shows it draining to the dipstick tube, but where does it go with the m50?

    2. What is the disadvantage of using one of these type crank case vent filters:

I see them mostly being used by turbo guys. Seems like a very simple solution so I don't see why more people don't use it.

    3. Do people that use catch cans usually plug the part of the intake that the hose goes into?(hose #4 in the first pic) I assume you would obviously have to plug this hole if you were using a filter like the one pictured above. Is it really necessary to have a vacuum for the crankcase vent via the intake if the purpose of the system is just to relieve pressure?

    Wondering as well.

    Where does 4 go either?

IIRC that hose, on a NV, goes back into the intake pre TB. There is also no oil separator on the NV.

DO NOT plug it. At the very least, run that filter on it. Although I dislike the filter as well.

Basically, during the combustion process, some gasses will get past the piston rings. Especially non brand new engines. This creates pressure in the crank case. With too much pressure, the piston rings won't seal as well as time goes on. So at the very least, the filter will give you atmosphere. Plugging it will cause bad things.

Putting this back into something with a vacuum will help the piston rings seal better.

Yes turbo guys tend to put their catch can attached to this. Generally if it's bad enough that you're filling the catch can... you have issues.

      Summation:
      Don't plug it
      Filter is ok
      vacuum is best method

      Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

        go obd2

run the e36 m52/s52 pressure regulator its a much better system but you will need to use the obd2 dipstick tube drain nipple. you see it would be a straight swap but the obd2 is larger in diameter not in height but in diameter so what I did was removed/saw off the obd2 nipple attachment drilled in the same size opening to the obd1 tube and soldered on the peice. It is very important for these motors to run efficiently.

I didn't mean plug the crankcase vent, I meant plug the part of the intake manifold that the oil would drain to or the vacuum would come from, in the factory setup.(or else there would be a vacuum leak.) This would need to be done if you were using a filter. Like this one:

This looks like all it does is relieve pressure, it keeps the oil in, so no need for a catch can or to drain the oil into the intake, which I see as a good thing, and a more simple setup.

edit: so the question is now, is the vacuum really needed, or is it overkill by bmw, and as long as pressure is relived the piston rings will be just as good.

If you want every last drop of HP out of your engine, run vacuum.

True. Makes sense, if there is a slight vacuum, intake flow could slightly improve.

                  Go here:

                  www.M50manifold.com

If you use the s52 ivc to intake boot hose... you can do the samething..simply connect that hose to the pressure regulator and the other end to the ivc simple
