waterpump HAS to be bad right?

I've got an M42 rad. I know they're a bitch sometimes, but I've let this car bleed for more then an hour. I know all the bubbles have come out. Then I can let the car idle for more then an hour with the bleed screw in and everything normal and it won't overheat. When I get the RPMs going, especially on the highway, the temp gauge will slowly creep to the right. But when I idle it'll go back to the middle! theres no way I'm improperly bled, because everytime I bleed it it doesn't seem to change at all the way the temp builds up. And basically no bubbles come out anymore anyway. No way my HG's blown or anything, compression test is all fine and awesome and no symptoms of anything head or headgasket related. I'm thinking maybe the impellers on the waterpump are worn out?

If you are sure it is properly bled (raise the nose of the car up, turn heater on full hot), you could try putting another water pump on (I'd suggest a Stewart pump). If that doesn't fix it then you need to rethink that the head and headgasket are fine. You might have a crack in the head- or the block.

maybe your hoses on firewall are backwards, mine were.

And the m42 rad is the easiest to bleed, not sure why sometimes people have so much trouble

That's what I'm thinking. Do you have heat when you turn your heater on?

And did you check/change the waterpump before you put the motor in? E36s had plastic impellers on the water pump that were notorious for breaking. Mine M50 from an E34 525i had the metal impeller.

M42 radiator takes 5 minutes to bleed, it is definitely the easiest way to do it with a 24v engine.
