I was having a quick clean in my engine bay today when I removed my K&N filter to clean it (probably not even worth it, doesnt look like the PO has touched it since he put it in in '07). At the same time i was trying to diagnose a noise that i was hearing from the bay at times (ended up being a slight nick in the belt that was squeals for a second as it passes over the alternator pulley.)
What then happened was that the car decided that it would not idle while i did not have the dirty as hell air filter on, basically the car would stutter and die over about 5sec. Put the dirty filter back on and the car idles perfectly...
Firstly, is it normal for the car to not idle with no air filter installed?
Is it possible that if for some reason the restriction caused by the dirty filter is allowing it to idle properly? If so would i possibly have issues if i install a new filter...
