F1 flywheel and s52 sachs clutch w/M50,ZF?

    F1 flywheel and s52 sachs clutch w/M50,ZF?

    Recently bought a 10lb F1 flywheel and oem s52 clutch. F1 told me that the later model m3 clutch is whats needed for the conversion from a dual mass to single. Does this sound right to you guys? I know theres a ton of options for clutches and flywheel just making sure what I got will work

    Generally, If an engine has a single mass flywheel, itll be mated with a sprung clutch disc. If it came with a dual mass flywheel, itll use a unsprung hub. S52/s50's came with dual mass flywheels so their clutches are unsprung.

    So ideally youd want to purchase a clutch kit with a sprung hub since you bought a single mass light weight flywheel. With that said, you can use a single mass flywheel with and unsprung hub without any problems. It might just take a more effort to engage it "smoothly" from a stop.

      hearing that kinda bums me out. this car is my DD so I don't wanna make it a pain to drive. is there a diameter/ width difference between the sprung and unsprung clutches?

        I got the late model unsprung sachs clutch so I should be good then

          nop.... that's what won't work. the dual mass clutch is not compatible with that ltw flywheel. You need the oe sprung clutch.. or equivalent i've seen puck unsprung clutches on ebay that are total overkill for 98% of e36's.

            I don't know if it matters but I have the 10lb aluminum single mass flywheel, not sure why F1 would tell me to use the unsprung :( F1 does make a couple different flywheels right?

              Care to elaborate? I'm running an 11lb JB racing flywheel with an un-sprung s52 clutch disc and s52 PP and it works just fine, engagement is a bit more abrupt than with a sprung hub but barely noticeable.

              FYI while both s50 and s52 clutch/fly assy's are 240mm in dia. the alignment dowels on the flywheel and pressure plate are different between the two, so you can't run an s50 pp on an s52 flywheel and vice-versa. Or so I have found on the internet.

                yeah i don't know there's different part numbers for the clutches and flywheels. i too am running an f1 ltfly on a e36 sach's.. my oe clutch is sprung though.

                  if you need a 240mm diameter Sprung Center friction disc for ZF Sg320 5 speed transmission you can just order the part for e34/28 M5.

                  Not sure what pattern Pressure plate the F1 china parts are designed for, perhaps post some photos next to an OEM BMW dual mass flywheel for s52 to compare?

                  S50/S52/M50 non vanos from E34/M52b28 with zf 5 speeds all have compatible Pressure plates; all of these engines/cars have a common shared transmission: ZF SG310 (early version) and SG320 (later version). You cant really tell the difference between them side to side besides the older units being dirtier.

                  I have Done interchanged clutches myself with my own hands - Locals can stop at julians shop to see all the combinations in person (I think there are 5-6 different complete clutch sets in the stash at BNB)

                  These all use a dual mass fly + 240mm standard + unsprung friction disc. Full BMW OEM Designed interchange, transmission/slave/clutch etc all interrchange


                  Driving a single mass flywheel + unsprung friction disc + whatever pressure plate you wish is ok if you have good foot control; BUT this stresses out the Throw out bearing; makes the bearing fall apart and eject its front half prematurely. Probably not the best suggestion for most people, but I have driven this and it is feasible for those with good pedal modulation in traffic.

                  if you have tons of traffic every day to DD though it is probably not suggested for lower back health long term.

                      I [personally] wouldn't worry about it too much. I've dd'd my E36 M for the last 8 months with a JBR Ltw flywheel w/ unsprung clutch. Before that, dd'd my S52 E30 for 1.5 years with a Fidanza ltw flywheel and unsprung clutch. Before that I drove my M42 318is for a year with a JBR and unsprung clutch. Before that I drove my eta with a single mass early flywheel and unsprung clutch. I've never had an issue with modulation, engagement and startup from a stop feel the same as my new Mini. Never had any issues. My mother has driven the E36 M and S52 E30 and I asked if the clutch was a pain in either car and she said they both drove like any other manual she's driven (she had a Mini S and Element AWD manual at the time).

                      Just my opinion based on experience. Not negating other input, just providing some of my own.

                        Thanks for the input guys. I feel like with what I heard,
                        I should be ok with this setup then. As far as pedal control and driveablility I shouldnt have a problem. My other car (saab 9-3) has a 7.5lb flywheel and a stage 4 clutch and I used to DD that with harsh engagement and noises when slipping the clutch.
