I don't know anything about the Z3 wiring. You can find diagrams for the engine harnesses out there.
Here's how mine looks (its pretty messy).. It works for me, but idk if its the "usual" way of connecting it :loco:
I dont have the thicker red cable, but thats because I removed it, but i still have it to put back if necessary. Where is the other end connected to? I was told its not needed due to the fact that it use to supply the e36 fuse box with power, which is not necessary for the e30 fuse box.
thanks, just trying to figure out my no start problem!

Well, the thicker red wire is the wire that connects to the starter. The wire you're talking about is the thinner red cable that's in my picture. That one was the stock power wire that runs from the distribution block to the fusebox.
Here's a pic of the other end. You can see the thick power wire going down to the starter.. And you can also spot the other thin red power wire (ziptied above the brake booster) going into the fuse box..
No prob. Also note that the "random power wire from wire harness" is basically unnecessary. It is the wire that Mr. Shmobberr was talking about that he removed from the harness. It is the power wire from the e36 harness that is used to give power to the e36 fuse box. That wire and the e30 fuse box wire hold the same purpose, I just connected both just in case since at the time I was trying to diagnose a problem I was having. You can also see the other end of that wire routed to the inside of the fuse-box. Just been too lazy to remove the extra wire, but it's not doing any harm so I'll do it whenever I have the urge to..
Cliffs: In the pic, I have two power wires going to the fuse-box. You only need one

Hope this helps.
ok looking goo so far. nice brake booster, mines blue! that red thick cable that runs in front of the booster, does that go to the starter? just making sure mines wired right

Yessir, it goes to the starter.. And yeah the booster was nasty and dirty, so cleaned it up and painted it with extra paint laying around ;)
And don't count my wiring as completely "correct".. I never saw pics of other members dist blocks and had to figure it out by connecting wires around. Im sure other's wiring is a lot cleaner than mine  Hope someone else chimes in

that wire labeled "untouched ground", is actually a hot wire from the battery with a fusible link. if yours shows no voltage, then the fusable link is probably burnt. i just dont wanna see people tying to ground other accessories to that lug.
i have always removed the e36 starter wire. makes the harness much smaller, alot easier to fit in the m3/318 covers.

howd you get the e36 starter wire out of the harness? I remember trying to take it out and using the m20 wire but couldnt manage to :(.. If thats the case, Im going to have to open up my harness soon and delete that starter wire and the extra fusbox wire I have in there. Thx for clearing that up! I'll post updated pics when I get around to it
I have zero casing on my harness so i can nit pick through it if needed. i took time to remove that cable shortly after, looks way better imo as well ha
