My shifter isn't centered, too far forward

I don't know if this has been an issue for the rest of you all or just me. After doing the swap my shifter is too far forward in the hole. I can shift it into R,1,3,5 but not if I put the console back into place. Am I using the wrong aluminum shift carrier (the alum. piece that the shifter ball and cup fits into)? Do I need the E36 one? Did I maybe put something in backwards or wrong?

I used a manual transmission from the donor car (95 E34). My aluminum shifter assembly came out of an E30 325iC.

You sure the shift rod isn't in backwards?

Once I get the E36 shift carrier, one end fits on the transmission and the other goes to the body. Will it fit into the stock E30 bracket that mounts to the body or do I need the E36 one too?
