Weird electrical problems, engine revs on its own

So my car is a '87 with a m50 swap that was initially done by R3Ver I3ueller and it was passed a few times before me. Anyways its been my daily for about a year and a half with very few problems until i was in traffic yesterday and it straight up died on me.

Pushed it to the side of the road and inspected the usuals. tried a few times to turn it over and eventually i got it to start. It purred at a nice idle and then it revved itself up to about 2500 rpms and then died. I noticed that when this happened the mpg gauge flicked across its band and the temperature gauge was also flickering a bit. I remember hearing about these gauges flickering when the ecu is resetting, so i think it could be a funky ecu? or maybe a TPS sensor, or MAF? Anyone ever seen this or heard of this happening.

well since this is such a popular thread I will indulge you all with a follow up with the first round of testing. So first I tested the TPS which turned out to be OK, then i cleaned out the ICV, which was filthy and i also cleaned out the MAF just for good measure.

After resetting the computer it started just fine for me with no problems at all. It idled for maybe a minute and then it would rev itself up to about 2500 rpms and then the CEL would come on and it would die. this happened twice for me.

I still have been unable to get the stomp test to work. I have a Turner Motorsport chip that brings out the most of the S50 cams that are in it, could that be what is not allowing me to stomp test?

Does anyone in Portland or Vancouver have a OBD1 tester i could rent? Thanks and I look forward to the mass of questions this thread has been bringing.

I'm having the same issues. I'll sit at idle and suddenly the car will jump up to 2500k and won't back off. I can drive the car without pressing the gas peddle. I've performed the same functions as you have. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.
