soooo before i did my swap my motor constantly ticked in my e36 m3 i had and said screw it im going to rebuild the motor and put it in my e30 which i did. Hoping that would get rid of the tick because the motor had 180,000 miles on it. When i took it apart i found where the owner before either money shifted and the valves hit the pistons and had a little bit of scratch on the cams......so i kept the pistons and put everything back together. ad the noise is still there but idk if anybody has a solution to my problem maybe new cams?

Hydraulic lifters use oil to keep up the slack between the valve and cam. If they sit for too long the oil drains out and the lifter can collapse, causing a tick.
Sometimes it takes soaking the lifter in oil to allow them to fill back up and function again.
They should have been soaking in oil during the rebuild. No E30 ClubOriginally posted by MrBurgundyAnyways, mustangs are gay and mini vans are faster than your car, you just have to deal with that.

This happened on my last e30. Car ticked and once warmed up it would go away. Was told it needed new valves. New owner removed the head to have everything checked out and it ended up having a crack in the head. Sucks

lifters should pump back up with oil after revving at about 3500. First time I ran mine it sounded like a fork in a garabage disposal until they filled up even though they had been sitting in oil before install. I fully rebuilt my motor but still had a slight valvetrain tick. I ran some ATF in the oil for a few miles (don't run it in there for long) to help clean out the lifters or any other small places like that. Lifters are much quieter now. However I can still hear one of them, lifter do just fail sometimes.'87 325ic, powered by S50.

hva's are also goint to make a difference if they are original i'd try swapping those, they are the shock between your valves and cam so if the over rev did happen then theres a chance the valve could be "mushroom" causing the noise also.
