    advice needed...dropping frt subframe...

    Ive searched and searched....


    what is simplest way to remove frt subframe w/ the s50 in?...how to supprt the engine?...

    Mine is cracked and I want to redo another w/ reinforcements....

    (even tho the cracked sf had them!....bummer)

      Engine hoist, or there is a holder that you can get. It braces across from fender to fender and just simply hooks to the engine lift point. It will hold the engine up. They are like $40 or something at harbor freight

        I can't remember what it's called, but its a hoist that attaches to the strut towers and holds the engine in place by those. M-Technik-3 used one to change the oil pan gasket on is E36 M. Here it is pictured below, just can't remember the name of it.

            We call this a "Johnny Bar" but you can get a decent one on eBay new for $47.95 shipped.

            Awesome for suspension refreshes and oil pan repair jobs. One of the best tools I ever purchased.

              lol, knew it had to be something obvious. Don't own one, but its on the list of tools I need (and yes they are awesome).

                words to the wise- make sure if you do the gussets that you can properly access the motor mount nut with it in place.

                I ran into that problem(forgot it goes into the slot, not the hole when I put in the gussets) when I dropped my S50 in. I left it suspended with the cherry picker while I pulled the subframe and cut them out.
                I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.

                  I use it more than I thought I would too. Cheap tool to have around. Used it when doing my transmission on an E36. To support it so not to tear up the engine mounts.

                    The exterior gussets are a huge pain in the ass. Leave them out.

                    Engine support brace is the only way to go.

                      you guys rock...much appreciated...

                      update.....


                      I may sound like a fool but Im w/ friends so who cares......

                      so Im going to get a nice used sf...and after looking at pics of it over and over I see the same exact cracks/slits in it as well.....on both sides too.

                      I now think the factory put perhaps relief slits in?....on each side......just foward of the top control arm nut (that faces the sky).....this is looking down into engine bay......can any1 confirm Im not nuts?

                      now, if that makes any sense, I do think?that one side appears to have a spread a bit more......hmmmm. Ive never eyeballed these "slits" in the 1000s of times Ive looked in there...but I wasnt really ever concentrating on the frt sf ever....
