old sheet, but gotta ask about g260 shift carriers

I know this is old stuff...and Ive searched......but I just gotta know:

I recall when my swap was done, the shop said my carrier/console had to be modified as the shift lever was not lined up w/ the hole in trans tunnel.

this is an s50/g260 set up.....

Im aware of course of the twist needed in the sel rod......

who else had this issue?.....and were late ( 89 and newer)e30s made w/ differing carriers?....

I cut my shift carrier in half and used some steel plating to mate it back together so it would sit more towards the center. And twisted my selector rod.

    Like what this guy did:

Mine was way off to the right, couldn't even get into 5th without jamming the console. Reverse was the only time it was centered.

What? Mine is the opposite problem. It rams hard into the console when I'm going into reverse, but 5th is fine.

Maybe I should un-twist my selector rod a little.

Without doing anything mine was way off to the right. After cutting the shifter carrier I got it to center up, but the shifter itself still tilted towards the right till I twisted the selector rod.

Just save yourself the trouble, and get one of these:

Even with my selector rod twisted to 10°, my shift lever still hit the side of the console going into reverse. With the 24V DSSR, it doesn't come anywhere near it.

Josh, I dont see how that would fix it, if it does than it does, problem is when the tranny is rotated 10 degrees to the right the shifter carrier also moves with it to the right, inturn moving the whole shifter to the right. The only thing the DSSR does is compensates for the 10 degree twist, it doesn't account for the shift in the shift console. But like I stated earlier, if that fixes the problem then kool, I never had a problem with my setup with stock slector rod though. =)

guys.....what Im asking if e30 had different LENGTH carriers?...

it seems that w/ some swaps using the g260 the shift lever doesn't end up lined up w/ the trans tunnel hole where the lever enters the cockpit....

I know about the sel rod twist required...

Josh...did u ever get the set up on the road yet?...

I have never compared carrier length, sorry...but I can tell you that the shift selector rod in my '87 325iS (Aluminum carrier) is about 1 1/4" longer than the one I pulled out from an 84 325e (sheet metal carrier), does that help?

BTW, what are you trying to accomplish? I have never liked where my shifter sits, I want to move the pivot point back about 2 to 3 inches, are you thinking something like that too? Post some results if/when you get them.

I've used two different types of length carriers(one with offset and straight ones), one with the offset from later models(offset) was the longer and better solution. The one i'm using now is the shorter and non-offset carrier, probably from a different tranny, can't remember.

Mine always sat to the right alittle bit. Could get it into all of the gears fine tho, except 5th took a bit more effort. Its just the nature of the beast

If you use the 24v dssr from UUC then you can leave everything else as in in the m50/gr260?

yes..u can just opt to use the twisted dssr w/ all stock stuff.
