    Notorious engine tick

I have my 90 325i with swapped m50b25tu that has a pretty annoying engine tick. The tick is pretty consistant with rpm range and doesn't have that "marbles in a can" sound so I do not believe it is Vanos related.

It used to tick almost anytime the car was on but seemed to get worse when the engine was at operating temperature. I used Rislone engine treatment on my last change and it definitely helped but obviously the problem is a little more serious.

Symptoms as of now: It is pretty quiet when I first fire it up but the tick will get progressively louder once the engine is at operating temp. My oil pressure light sometimes comes on and off but only while the engine is at idle. Also, it will be on if I am on a slight incline but will go away with a tap of the throttle.

I read someones thread the other day on here with a very similar problem and symptoms and it ended up being a bad pickup tube gasket. I was wondering if this sounds like the culprit or if there are more things to check before I dive into that project. I know it isn't loose spark plugs because I just recently change them and the tick was the same before and after.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Sorry I thought that was a given. Yes, oil level is correct. I have even tried running a little more since I read some people run about 7.5 qts, still no help.

Thank you for reminding me. I started with 20w50 and there was an annoying tick from the top end as well. I switched to 10w40 and that ended the head tick but the tick in the bottom end still exists.

If you're getting bottom end tick, something is very not right. Did you secure the oil pump nut when you did the pan/pump swap?

Yessir. I used red locktite on it. I came to the conclusion that I will just have to pull the pan off and see what the problem is. Hopefully just the gasket or something easy, but probably not.
