    Starter whine

I am running a e34 M5 flywheel and clutch on a s50 mated to a zf gear box and it makes a terrible whine on start up. Link to a video bellow

Has anyone heard a starter make this noise before? It seems as though the starter gear may meshing too closely against the ring gear?? Ive tried pushing the starter outward a little then torquing it down but that didnt make a difference as there is very little wiggle room. The only other thing i can can thing of doing is shimming the starter.

im using the stock s50 starter. The ring gear of the s38 flywheel matched the s50 dual mass. But perhaps the through of the starter gears are different between the two?

I've been too busy to try silencing the whine, although I should get to it sooner then later. I have just been dealing with the whine it hasn't changed really. I am hoping i can fix the issue with a few washers to move the starter away (towards the front of the car) from the flywheel. I will post my results when I get to it haha.

eek. sounds like starter to fw teeth mismatch; that or the starter is hanging on the fw a little too long.
Not sure if the E34 M5 fw teeth match the 24v or not. Wanganstyle would know.

Im using the stock M20 FW, G260, and original starter...same issues. The sound has not gotten any worse...or better.

Either of you try a different starter? Sounds kind of like the starter is sticking a little too long. :Dunno

yeah the starter gear is defiantly hanging on the fly wheel. If shimming the fly wheel does not work ill try a m30 or s38 starter to see if it for one fits and two solves the issue seems like a logical way to go. Its strange though since the ring gear on the s38 flywheel and the s50 fly wheel are the same, the tooth profile anyhow.
