    6-speed

I plan on installing an s50 motor into my car in the next couple months. I have access to a Euro 6-speed tranny. What is involved with installing this sucker? Is it the same dimmentions as the e36 5-speed, or not? What would I have to use for the driveshaft, and shift linkage?

Also, what is a good price for one? Is $2200 + shipping way too much. I know it costs almost as much as my s50 motor.

hmmm...I don't know about fitment but 2200 seems like a lot to spend on a tranny. Is it a dogleg?

That seems like a fair enough price, depending on the mileage. Cheapest I've ever seen them go for was $1800, and they're usually closer to $3K.

The tranny itself is bigger and heavier than any of the 5spds. It's been done before multiple times, and as far as I know sorting out the shift linkage isn't a big deal at all. Not sure about the driveshaft though. Unless some random BMW driveshaft or combo of two halves fits, you'll probably need to get one custom shortened.
Euro MZ3 driveshaft maybe? Did they ever get a 6spd?

you might be able to get away with a s54 powered us spec MZ3 drive shaft- it had a 6 speed. The issue with the euro 6 speed is that the driveshaft has 6 bolts to the diff, rather than 4. I'm not sure what the ouput on the actual tranny is though. You're definately looking at a custom driveshaft, or at least modify the hell out of yours.

I would suggest this: if you're dead set on a 6 speed, buy one from a 330i, z4, or e60 5 series (there is one on car-part.com from a 2005 530 for $1500), get the zionsville conversion manual (http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com/s...gory_Code=6SPC)
and have a hay day. They charge $2100 for the kit(minus tranny) and I really don't think it'd cost near that much if you were to find the parts yourself (I did the steering rack conversion for $250 with a z3 rack, they wanted $550).

Either way, you'll probably be making a custom brace, you'll need a different flywheel/clutch system, and driveshaft.

if you want an s50, go to www.car-part.com. they have all the salvage yards across america... not really, but i;m drunk, so it seems like it, i can barely type right now... but serisouly. car-part.com will find you one. i'd suggest a s52 (it seems like you'd use an "an" right there, but you dont) because there is an s52 in bellingham, or bellview (whatever, either way its in washington) for 2500, and thats a steal for an s52 shortblock.

                anyways... have fun!!!!111!!!one!!!!111!

Short block? As in nothing but block, crank, rods and pistons? $2500 isn't a "steal". You can get a complete (aka head, block, all internals, oil pan, all manifolds, wiring and sensors, maybe tranny too) for $3500, maybe less.

I found my s50 from a guy on bimmerforums. I posted a WTB thread, and I was supprised when I found a lot of people offering s50/s52 motors to me. I ended up taking a 25,000 mile s50 from a guy that was local to me. I am pretty happy with the deal. I almost have all of the parts needed for the swap (I think).

Not a good idea. He lives in Cali. He wouldn't be able to get it legalized by the refferee to pass smog.

Anyways, I probably won't get the 6-speed :( . There is too much other stuff I need before I can spend my money on that. I still need to pay back my gf for loaning me the money to buy my motor...

shortblock includes complete bottom end + head and oil pan. basically an engine minus accessories.

S52 should pass smog fine. he doesn't have obd-2 restrictions on such an old car. just make sure you have a good cat, and propper tuning.

FYI, "shortblock" usually refers to a complete bottom end.
A "longblock", at least according to BMW is a complete engine minus accessories, manifolds, and wiring.
