Are all 24v heads the same?

I saw someone mention that the vanos unit bolts up to a non-vanos head... and indeed it does. The NV has all the provisions there for the oiling system and the timing cover thing on the head is setup the same way as the vanos unit. So, are all the 24v heads the same? Can you swap double vanos to a single or non-vanos head? And it certainly looks that with a couple non-vanos parts and non-vanos cams, vanos could be deleted without pulling the head.

Yes they are all the same except later heads have more efficient improvements. But they will all bolt on and work.

1992- fat valve stems(heavier valve), double valve springs, slightly different CC of the compression chamber

1993-1995- slim valve stems, single wide springs

1996-1999- slim valve stems, single tapered valve springs, lighter and smaller valve spring keeper

I am not getting into camshaft, trays and lifter arguments here

Best head to get is 1996-1999 and 1992 the worst

i wonder if the s54 head on a s52 would work. obviously you would have to change engine management for the additional vanos. just curious, or am i retarded.

Why? So you could have a lower compression, lower displacement S54 with crank harmonic issues above 7200rpm?

The bottom end is not the expensive part of the S54.

Even some "400" heads are the early design and have less coolant ports. See my pictures. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...light=400+head

            Cracked head '400'

Replacement '400' head has less coolant ports, same amount of coolant ports as a '070'

            Early Vanos M50 '070' head

but that is assuming the heads are complete stock form, the bare head itself is all the same 93-99 minus the coolant temp sender lack of on the 96-99
