    Firewall Insulation

hey guys im in the middle of swapping my eta with an m50tu and at the same time im doing a mild shave and painting the bay.

my question is if i remove my haggard old insulation on the firewall, what are the consequences going to be? obviously bmw put it there for a reason, is it sound deadening, heat protection etc?

i definitely need to remove it to paint back there and clean up some rust aswell, should i buy a new one or leave it be?

ended up having 99% of mine fall off the firewall of its own accord. due to this, there is a slight amount of extra heat in the passengers footwell where the exhaust runs. there does not seem to be any extra noise, however I drive a cabbie, so I wouldnt be able to tell due to wind noise and all the other ambient noises that the cabbie makes (I can still clearly hear my poly CAB's squeaking away though)
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...

I have seen people in varouis threads replacing the orifinal firewall insulation with aftermarket material. Looking do do the same and can't find where I saw that.

Would like to get materail recommendation Thanks!

Sorry for the resurrection, but I was looking into this too, as my bay is completely empty, and the 27 year old material is falling off.

I found this, which requires spray-on adhesive, if I read it right.

Or this one, a bit smaller coverage, but it is self adhering...

Anymore input on this would be great!

Why not buy the oem insulation? I got the transmission tunnel piece from ecstuning for like $60 and some shipping. Just took a few days to get in. Looks great.

So, I can't tell on the actual BMW part if it's what we're talking about, but the second one looks nice... Only issue is that it says M3, although I'm pretty sure it's probably the same thing... Luke M, is that the one you got?
                      Thanks

The insulation isn't that expensive, and you hear a lot of debris noise without it.

That sucks... Looks real nice, and pretty much exactly the same... So which one is Luke talking about, and I'm afraid to use link #1 since it's too hard to tell... Thanks though!
