    Running an S52 on an M52 DME/harness

First: hardware. Are there any notable differences between the M52 and S52 harnesses? I really can't discern anything on the ETMs.

Second: software. Since both motors use a Siemens MS41.1 DME, the only difference there can be is in the fuel/ignition maps/VANOS activation, right? Could this software change be flashed by a competent tuner? Also, there is scarce info regarding desoldering the chip that controls the fuel and ignition maps on the DME motherboards, allowing either a chip socket, or just a simple chip swap. I'd like to explore this route if possible, as I already have an S52 DME.

Right now I have an S52 DME and harness from an E36 M3 but am considering picking up the full compliment of DME/harness/EWS/all OBD2 components from a running 2.8 Z3.

Why? I like the idea of running the DME exactly as it should from the factory, with all emissions controls, and with EWS protection for my car. I will, however, be omitting ASC because it likely won't communicate with the E30's ABS computer, and traction control is for little girls anyway.

    Thanks all.

Z3 M52 harness has one pre cat and one post cat 02 sensor only. And S52/M52 harness have 4. That is the only difference that I know of.

Could this software change be flashed by a competent tuner?
    No, you can't flash MS41.1 M52 dme with MS41.2 S52 software.

Why? I like the idea of running the DME exactly as it should from the factory, with all emissions controls,
Reason why you would not be able to do this without the proper OBD2 tune for swapped cars is because, MS41.1 uses sophisticated evaporative system monitoring, you would need OBD2 complaint fuel tank and be able to install all that into your E30.

I noticed the o2 sensor disparity, which is curious. what all comprise the evaporative emissions control system? Could it all be retrofitted to an e30 tank?

thanks for the info though. I wonder if I could have the s52 DME aligned with the m52 ews system from the z3 by a dealer or a tuner..

you can install the EWS module from any E36 and let it just control the starter, and your S52 can be flashed to what ever, it can be flashed to run only on two 02 sensors like Z3 is, so you only need to run one catalytic converter, then the evaporative system can be flashed out and you will still pass emissions. All "readiness monitors" will be set to complete. I provide this kind of flashing service for all ms41.1 ecus.

^ so you have the capability to re-align my S52 DME to an EWS module/key chip set?

what information do you need for re-alignment.. the VIN of the car the EWS came off of, what else?
