Didn't the NV or early M50's come with a paper gasket from the factory for the oil pan?

Pretty much any of the new style metal/rubber gaskets will be better then that one. I am using an OEM BMW metal/rubber gasket and before that the the VR, both worked fine. Also all the m50's E34 & E36 use the same pan gasket.

If your going to use sealant don't use any of that crap that's sold at auto part stores. Get some Honda bond or Nissan bond. I use the nissan stuff all the time. You'll never leak a drop if you use the Nissan stuff and apply it correctly. Make sure the surface it's going onto is clean and dry, also give it time to cure.

The VR gasket is fine given two conditions -

              1) You use the gasket that is matched to your pan.
              2) You torque the bolts to the correct Nm - don't over tighten!

Add a little RTV at where the timing case meets the block and you're golden.

I might use hondabondht and coat the whole gasket.

I dont have a mini torque wrench, a but a quarter inch drive would make it hard to overtorque em

Found threebond 1184 local for a good price. So I will be using that.

                  Same as hondabond/yamabond

also, dont discount changing out the rear main seal/rear main housing gasket. Many an oil pan gasket has been changed because of a faulty RMS

I believe it is the oil pan gasket leaking, not the rear main.

Stock Victor Reinz gasket and Permatex gasket sealer. Not even a slight film anywhere on my engine.
