    flywheel balancing

I'm rebuilding an s52 engne. Question, Do I need to balance the flywheel (m5 used) when I mate it up to a new pressure plate ? Should this all be balanced to the s52 crank ? Thanks , Joe

    Anyone know this answer ?

In a perfect world sure you would have the entire rotating assembly balanced together. I doubt that hardly anyone with a street car has the pressure plate and flywheel assembly balanced together, at least when replacing worn clutch components etc.

I agree but this is not just a clutch replacment . I've got the motor in a rebuildable torn down condition. Could these s52 motors use a crank/used m5 flywheel/with new pressure plate, assemble balancing when mating up mismatched rotating parts ? Joe

I would call an automotive machine shop and ask them what they think. If you have it all torn apart im sure you could get the whole shebang balanced together.

If you are having the crank ground or worked on, then yes supply them the crank, flywheel, PP, clutch disc, harmonic balancer and rods / pistons

they can then balance the whole thing as needed.

cost is not much more over regular machining costs... whilst its all apart why not.

If you can afford to balance it, I would do it. Makes for nice revs and in theory the motor will last longer.

wouldn't it be smarter to just balance the internal rotating assembly + harmonic damper and flywheel?

clutches and pp's get changed all the time. those other components will be pretty much static throughout the life of the car.

The PP and clutch Assy will come balanced out of the package to a reasonable degree. Not many people bother having these balanced, same for the flywheel, it should come balanced out of the package. Now when you add together the whole rotating assembly and look at its balance as a unit it may change a little bit but not a significant amount as compared to the individual units'.

You have to ask yourself how far you want to go, if you are doing a complete balance and blueprint of the crank and rods then by all means do the flywheel and clutch/PP as well but otherwise it isn't worth it. I mean there is a fair difference between how tight the balance specs for a stock engine coming from the manufacturer and those of a custom blue printed engine will be, it all comes down to cost.

Well thanks all. I'm balancing the crank/m5,240mm Flywheel/presure plate as a unit. Some of the replys are good ,some replys should have read it twice before responding. Thanks, Joe
