    M5x lean angle

    So I searched all over the enternet trying to find the lean angle of our engines. only info I found was a guy on driftworks.com mention it was 15deg. I never found any hard evadence showing the correct number. or any pictures. I ended up doing the work my self. This is what I came up with.

    The M20 is 20deg.

    the left side of subframe(e30) where bushing mount sits. is 20deg
    the right side is also 20deg.



    oil pan is 30deg


    so with these numbers 30deg lean angle seems to be the number. witch makes sense since the selector shaft is off by 10deg when using a g260 trans on a M5x, M20 is mounted at 20deg lean angle.
    also if I put a level on the top of oil filter housing,the angle gauge on the cylinder head I get 30deg lean angle.
    thoughts,comments,concerns?

    Yes, its 30 degrees.

    M42 and all M5X and S5X engines are at 30 degrees lean

      From my half awake perspective :yawn: I would assume that this means most of our swapped motors on soft mounts either deform the motor mounts 5-10 degrees, or the motor ends up tilted closer to ~35 degrees. Maybe

      Which would explain the angle on AKGs swap mounts...

        Good point on the mounts. I plan on updating this thread with more info soon. Hopfully people can have enough information to make their own mounts.

          well.... i have the answer... but i'm selling the mounts drawing for $15. Takes another $10 worth of materials to make them and you get to save yourself all this tinkering around. I respect that some just want to endure what i went through. The studs are offset so its not as easy as solidworks angles. Just sayin..

          AKG's are like $160 IIRC.

            You mean that somebody that can't make me engine mounts from a bunch of undefined lines in a solid works sketch? I better go back to school ;)

              Just sayin that a bunch of undefined lines might only give you a decent idea of what you have to do. The goal is to lign up the engine/tranny with the CSB and not to sit the engine at the degree you guys think the engine should sit. The engine can handle quite a bit of tilt, but then you have to worry about the headers hitting the subframe, the intake hitting the brake booster or your shifter not ligning up very well. Telling you, its a hell of a lot more work than just flying lines.

              No need to go back to school, buy my drawing ;)

                This got my attention. I run the green M5 motor mounts, am I doing it wrong?

                  So for the drivetrain to be properly aligned you need to get special aftermarket mounts like the AKG ones? ...not the stock "m5" mounts that many people use? What if you want the engine properly aligned but don't want the NHV of poly mounts?

                    WOW no.. M5 mounts work, but they deform quite a bit. AL mounts don't deform that's where i was going with this.

                    I tracked M5 mounts in the begining. It took 3-4 events till i ripped em. Put in IE yellow poly mounts. Melted the exhaust side. The driver's side had deformed so much it was on its way to tear. I said screw it, solid we go. Inline6's are so smooth anyways that you don't feel solid mounts after 1200rpm.

                    That's just my experience.

                      measured with engine at 30 deg lean angle. its the bottom of the engine mount arm where it would bolt to the engine mount bushing.


                      right side about 15deg



                      left side about 20deg


                      I did not get a chance to figure out the stud offset. i was really tight on time so this is all i got for now.

                        thanks for the info guys. i was consider soft polys from r3vshift for my daily swap but recently changed my mind for something more solid like condor.
