    my 87 325is m50 swap

1987 325is 5-speed the day i bought it for $900 first time doing this swap so i have alot to learn! kinda running on a budget too so trying to do most of the work myself (good experience too)!

got the m50 out of a 94 325ic auto for $300 with 120k on it! freshened it up some repainted most of it, metal thermo housing and thermostat, new waterpump, and swapped oil pan. got the m20 flywheel shaved at napa automotive (now weighs 16lbs), and the m20 clutch mounted up, running a g260 trans.

After a bit of forcing got it in. also using ebay replica headers (seem kinda cheesy to me but will work for the time being, also had to redrill some of the holes a bit to get them to line up properly but overall not bad for the price) Also using condor speed shop poly mounts.

Then began the wiring, deleted all the auto trans stuff i could find and made me up a list thanks to the etms on here and spliced the harness. I was a little scared about this when i started beings i hadn't really done anything like this on a car but wasn't as hard as it seemed! :)

And then what do you know, it fired right up!! :)

Took out the high beams and built a box in the corner for cold air, not sure how much of a difference this'll make though. Replaced the lights with a black mesh(gutter guard to be exact, like $3 from hardware store), just took the bulb out and put the mesh in the socket that held the bulb!

did some bumper tucking and repainting trim pieces, and this is where its at now. got some eibach springs (cheap) and a sparco strut brace. replaced rear shock cause they were horrible!!

Still have some issues that need worked out:

#1 bleeding the coolant system with this dumb m42 radiator( any other suggestions of radiators??)
Also i just bought an oem thermostat and put it in. Noticed some people have been running cooler thermostats wondering which is the best one? I think the one i have is 92*C an that seems a little too hot?!

Also my temp gauge wasn't working and so i just installed an aftermarket gauge so i can get an accurate reading, just would like to know what temp it is at the halfway mark, and also what is "too hot" for this engine?

#2 exhaust: i plan on running 3" all the way with just a muffler (we dont have e-check and i dont mind if its a little loud :) any good ideas of what brand sounds good with these?

#3 where to get the m3? wiring harness covers most people use with these swaps? Also saw some people maybe used 318 covers, does this work?

I'm sure there will be more questions down the road. Hopefully planning on boost in the near future! :)

    Heres a link to a youtube video!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKarVinf_1w&feature=plcp

#1: Get an 80 or 88C Thermo. Ditch the M42 rad and run a 88+ M20 setup. Save you many headaches. The engine should run ~10-15 deg F over your thermo temp assuming you have proper cooling. You dont want to see 220+ on these motors
    #3: me ;)

#1: 88* thermostat, look up 'the official fan wiring thread' and run an 80/88* fan switch to a good quality pusher fan. also, like junkie said, ditch the m42 rad and run a late model m20 radiator with the late model expansion tank.

#1a: if your temp gauge isn't working, it may be a couple things. first, did you swap in the e30 coolant temp sensor (brown top single pole) into the m50 head? the e30 gauge needs that particular sensor to get an accurate reading. also, you may want to disassemble the gauge cluster and re-flow any of the solder joints on the board. they get old and crack after 25+ years.

#2: 3" is a bit unneccesary for an m50tu, plus it may interfere with ground clearance under the rear subframe. 2.5" single should do the trick. also i really recommend wrapping the headers and running a resonator and muffler. it can get too raspy otherwise. look at borla proXS for the res, and dynomax super turbo or vibrant streetpower for the muffler.

#3: check this link and order #'s 21-24 from any reseller you desire http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...67&hg=51&fg=20

that said, nice work on the swap! looking forward to more updates.

That seams to be the way to go.

Any good input on what a good diff. would be good to run in this? i'm running stock right which i believe is a 4:10 but it seems to run at pretty high rpms!

What are the motor mounts recommended for this swap?

Anything you want really. E28 535i are about the gentlest, AKG makes poly ones, Condor speed shop ones are basically solid (UHMW) but don't vibrate as much as solid metal, and I believe from revshift you can get aluminum if you so desire.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Sweet. I'm pretty interested in this swap. I think this is what I'm going to do...

Great swap! I have a m52 project that just began. And thanks Vivek for that info I was wondering the same thing.

The condor speed mounts do vibrate more than the stock ones but not too bad. I would def. go with the softer ones if you plan on driving the car every day. i dont drive mine every day so the solid mounts are great!
