    Engine Stand for the S50??

I got an S50 I'd like to bolt up to an engine stand so I can do some work on before it goes in the car. Anyone know what to use? Are they all standard? How does it work? Thanks

I bought a new one from Harbor Freight for like $39 plus tax, only thing you will need to do is find long engouh bolts with the same thread as the block so that you can connect the engine to the stand, other than that they are universal, also you will need an engine lift if you didnt already have one.

There are usually four places to bolt up the engine, and they're mounted on moveable arms. So they're pretty much universal. Make sure you get Grade 8 hardware to mount it up; you don't want to use el cheapo hardware and have the engine fall on your foot!

very true...and you don't want to hurt the oil pan either ;)

nevermind, just spoke with a mechanic friend and I bought one from harbor freight for $35. It's a 750lb capacity one, you can find in on their website

wow, I got all those replies quickly!!

As far as an engine hoist goes...I've got a forklift, works quite well!

If you have a steady hand and a block so the chain doesn't slip off the fork +1. I like using an actuall lift because it's slow in lift and lowering so you can be a bit more carefull. I wouldn't get a stand with any less than a 750lb rating.

I've got a lot of little things to do to it. Want to mount it on a stand and crank it around by hand once a week or so to ensure no rust build up in the cylinder walls. I'd also like to bolt up the E34 oil pan and put on some lightweight pullies, install the upgraded water pump and thermo housing, and of course clean it so it looks brand new. For $35 I couldn't imagine an easier way to hold the engine up there, plus, it beats sitting on the floor to work on it.

I'll snap some pics next week when it's mounted up

The chain won't slip off the fork, I have a 6-foot boom with an eye-let hook on the end of it to hook the chain too. We've pulled two motors without a hitch!

we usually use a fork too. if there is no eye-let hole at the end, you put a c-clamp at the end of the fork. works pretty good too. jason

                        Make sure it's a 4-legged stand, do not put a 6cyl on a 3-legged stand.

It looks like you got this one, http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=32915

A friend of mine's M50 tipped off his stand, cracked the head and block castings. Just be careful with the 3-legger, but I'd return it for a 4-leg.

yeah I got that one, now you got me all nervous. But I've got a few ideas on keeping it from tipping. i picked it up after work today, hopefully I'll be able to get the motor mounted on it tomorrow...we'll see what happens
