M50 swap on the fence due to California BAR

    Ok My options
    A) Repair a "rod knock" issue on the M20 (it has a dinan chip)
    B) M50_Non Vanos swap with G260 (low cost)
but I'm on the fence due to the California BAR since I need this car as a daily driver.
    Any thoughts?

I had my car bar'd a month or so back.Skyline College 89 I '94 M50 vanos, 413 red label, all stock including 325 air filter/box (modified), 325 carbon canister stock location, purge valve hooked up etc.+. S52 headers vs CI M50 no comment from inspector painted them black, exhaust custom from headers to tail pipe. you have to set up exh as per stk E36 ie 2>1 with O2 sensor<2 cats. I used walker replacement for E36. if you have new cats installed be sure to have them installed with the walker part number visible, down.they will verify that. this is info i read from other posts/threads.
Ref did quiz me on source of engine. That seems to be topic #1. I had a bill of sale from a private party stating what why etc. also had previous smog test results from car motor was pulled from. So take all paperwork you might have.
Ref reviewed components on his computer MAF, DME etc. He had me pull the DME toand ran the serial # to verify application. and yes it was from a 95 something with 221,000 miles last time it was smogged. 413 is OK since it is still the same 'family' OBD1.
Ran smog test, and checked the CEL light about 4 times. I had the M50 harness connector work done by 328ijunkie so no adapter etc.
that was it. paid 8.95 for sticker he pasted it on the door jamb and adios. let me know if you have any questions Good Luck

Hmm, I pulled my S50 from a junkyard. I do plan to run the original silver label 413 DME (with EWS delete of course). The only other proof I have regarding the engine is the stamp on the block. I'm gonna try to pass with ebay headers, cone filter, and single Magnaflow 50 state replacement cat. Sounds like I might need to get lucky to pass.

This is what i have so far and let me know if this will work
            -Engine M50NV
-402 orange label for non vanos
            -stock headers
-carbon canister- need to get - where did you install it at?
            -air filter/box-need to get
            - exhaust needs to be custom
            - what is this exactly "you have to set up exh as per stk E36 ie 2>1 with O2 sensor<2 cats"

that is all i't comes to my mind right now

            Thanks

I went with the 413 since It seemed the most common I do not know about the 402
here are 2 current 413 for sale

-stock headers Cast Iron are original
-carbon canister- need to get - where did you install it at?
Do you have one from the E30?
I "installed" in stock location I used the E30 325 canister and plumbed hoses to it . reused the purge valve from the M20 throttle body. hoses get a little tight .
              -air filter/box-need to get
Many different comments on this. but seems to be Ref is only concerned from face of MAF to engine. Most people seem to use simple cone filter which is good enough to get you going and cost is fair. Pep boys or Autozone. chk out the engine bay sticky . I saw a couple of installs that used the M20 air box/filter thought that looked neat so did that. it takes a bit of fiddliing see post 467 /706 in eng bay thread there are other better photos
              - exhaust needs to be custom. No stock E36 can be massaged. I chose to do new system nothing fancy 21/2" all the way walker cats and magnaflow muffler. just make sure the installer keep the pipe tucked up to the floor.
              - what is this exactly "you have to set up exh as per stk E36 ie 2>1 with O2 sensor<2 cats"
the exhaust system has to match the M50 configuration. The M50 uses 2 down pipes that merge into 1 before the cat/s. that means 1 O2 sensor in front of 2 cats. After cats can be duals or merge into single to rear of car.
Keep in mind this is California. so some mods you see will not pass BAR.
I did what I think is the most basic swap. got a bit more power, had a good time and spent more money than I budgeted :D There is a boatload of info in the R3V swap section (and e30 tech) and lots of others with more experience than I have.

that is all i't comes to my mind right now

              Thanks

                .

The ref will chk the block #'s and enter that data into his computer which will bring up the equip specs/type he will be looking for. so make sure its nice and clean so he can read the stamped # make his life easy and no hassles. I'm guessing he will notice the headers on the visual inspt.
I think the ebay headers will most likely be a no pass. this is California not other 49 states
If the stk S50 utilizes 2 cats you need two cats. go to the walker/magnaflow etc. webpage and look up part #s etc for calif compliant part. also print out the specs on what ever cats you do go with and take with you to the inspection. The ref couldn't get online when he did mine but he accepted the spec sheet I happened to print out the night before.
As I mentioned in other post I did a 'basic' swap because I wanted to have it BAR'd so no BS at smog time 2yrs comes around really quick ummm S50 sounds good though!! GL

I've asked about the 413 but have been told that since i have a non vanos then i need a 402 since the 413 control the vanos and i do not have vanos then i need the 402
                  Any insights?
