UPDATE: issue still persists after the following replacements:
    -spark plugs
    -leaky fuel line
-icv hose to intake manifold connector(it was broken)
    -lower chain tensioner
    -crank position sensor

Car will *hesitantly* start but after starting it idles okay until you open the throttle body and it instantly will bog or make a horrible noise under the valve cover. timing is at TDC but I will verify this again. could there be a vanos issue paired with something else such a MAF or fuel pump? I ran a compression test once but I will do that again and go from there. any thoughts? anyone heard this sound before?

Hi! I know this is almost a decade old thread, but is the only one in the internet i found describing the issue my 528i e39 m52b28 is having.
I tried also some stuff, nothig worked so far. I'm driving it with the brand new dealer bought siemens camshaft sensor unplugged, wich is not ideal, but is the only thing that calm down the fucked up ignition firing order and makes the car usable.

Summing up... Did you sucess in fixing it?
I hope you red this, im desperare.

      Thank you!
