e34 has the engine oil level sensor already wired in so thats a plus.

e36 I believe has enough slack on the ecu side to comfortably mount the ecu in the stock position in the glove box.

I used an e34 one, and was able to mount the ecu with a little effort. If I was to do it again I'd use an e34 harness again.

I used e36 but didn't have the oil sensor hooked up. I think you can easily wire it up w/o the e34 harness.

Mind sharing how you made your e34 harness work (i.e. pictures/details)? I'm about to dive into my swap and want to make sure I know the "best" way to get the e34 harness and dme installed. Thanks!

All I did was mount up the ecu behind the glovebox before I secured the harness down in the engine bay with zip ties and what not. That allowed me the extra wiggle room to get it to fit.

Did you have to flip the DME, with the harness connector facing the engine bay, or were you able to get enough stretch/wiggle room to get it to sit like it's supposed to (harness connector facing the passenger, just like stock)?

pull the trigger its just a matter of mounting the dme so that the connectioin is in the back. and you will already have the oil level sensor connector. no other differences afik, some people build these things and find out after the swap is finished that they never even used a e36 but a e34,
