Dunno if anyone has ever measured but, when going from M42 to M5x, given the swap is done using the same trans, how far back does the transmission output flange move?? I ask b/c i'm planning an m52 swap with an M42 car BUT, and it's a big BUT, i'm using a g240 out of an M40. It's output flange is nearly flat against the transmission case, whereas the M42 G240's is set out a good 2" further(edit: read below, more like 1").
So, with an m50 + M42/g240(long output flange), one can use the E36 325i driveshaft. Now with m50 + M40 G240(flush/short output flange), which driveshaft?? Is it possible to use the e36 325i DEPENDING on how much shorter the M40/g240 flange is, don't want too much spline showing on the e36 325i driveshaft.
OR I still have a fresh M42/g240 driveshaft lying around, perhaps between the trans being shifted rearwards AND the shorter flange, it might work??
Anybody have any ideas?? The US never got the m40(lucky you), so matybe if anyone knows which driveshaft is an inch or two longer than the e36 325i d/s and will mate to an M42 flange, that's be great......help.
Thanks
EDIT-BTW before you ask 'why use a g240?!', because the shift feel is perfect, it's sealed quite well, and I can keep my freshly sealed/bushing'd 4.10.
