    vss question

i have a 91 325i with an obd1 m52. so what i'm reading is that late models don't need to have vss wired in from the cluster, you just connect pin 14 c101 to pin 14 x20. i'm having a vss code come up so i don't know if i wired in the c101 and x20 wrong or if i DO have to wire the vss from the back of the cluster. everything i've read says different things. help?

Yeah its all kinda vague.. the RM european page says to wire it in but right before he says that he mentions something about early model E30s.. Its poorly written just like most other guides, but Its impossible to have one "Go-to" swap guide because everyones cars and drivetrains are different.

In my 90 325 I swapped an E36 harness and the VSS was through the C101. go in and recheck youre wiring I guess

ok. if i need to wire in the vss through the cluster i'll take pics and make some sort of picture "how to" guide on the issue. but i'm just hoping that it's just my shitty wiring.

with a late model, c101p14 should be good. weird.

i guess you can tap into the yellow connector on the cluster, c3p26. good luck!

well i just checked my harness and i have pin 14 black/white on the x20 wired in. but pin 14 on the body side is a blue/yellow wire. i thought it was black/white too? or is it just a different colored wire?

Did anyone else with a late model run into any problems like this?

ok so i did a little more research and found that the blue/yellow wire for pin 14 body side of the e30 is still speed sensor. so my next task is to take a volt meter and test the power to pin 14 of the engine side. but will anything happen if i wire in the vss through the back of the cluster but still have pin 14 connected? will it just basically act as a "fail safe" or something? still kind of baffles me that i have pin 14 connected but yet still no speed sensor detected....

Soooo this is what came out of the situation. I went back and found that pin 14 on the engine side was black/gray instead of black/ white. So I fixed the issue and wired in the black/white wire. But after putting the cluster back in, I went to test drive it and the vss didn't seem to work still. No mpg and hunting idle issues. I don't think I test drove it enough to pull the code though. But my check panel decided not work when I put that back in. So what fucked up? I shouldnt have to wire the vss in the cluster because its a late model
