High mileage S50s . Anything to watch out for .

Hay guise. So I'm pretty much getting a free s50 after parting out this M3 I got.

    It's got 191,xxx on it.

Makes vanos noise . Did have valve tick, until I warmed it up alittle, then it went away. Runs well, alittle rich, but well.

So anything I should replace while the engine is out? Chain guides? Chain?

I've heard these engines are kind of notorious for dropping valves , should I do the retainers?

    Compression test next weekend .

    Kthnx.

Retainers are really only an issue before 9/95 production date. Doesn't hurt to do them at that mileage though.

Do the Beisan vanos kits, replace cooling system, do leakdown/compression check to gauge HG health, and rock. 5w40 Rotella will solve the valve tick for the most part. If you replace the retainers, check lifters for scoring, replace as necessary.

    source: I track a 175k S50 heavily.

Haha new gaskets everywhere! My m52 just started squirting oil through the coil grommets in the intake.

Buy the rebuilt m50 head I have and swap everything over. I even have the entire head seal kit(50.00).

All new EVERYTHING, valves, guides, retaining clips, springs. Decked and hot tanked to perfection.

Free s50 means rebuild that shit up while it is out and never worry again. I have all new race timing chains too. m50 and s50 share everything but the headgasket, bottom end a few other bits. Pretty much a bored out m50 with hotter cams.

you can clean the lifters with a solvent tank. sometimes they get lots of oil goo built up in them.

I did guides, tensioners, every gasket/seal sans HG, cooling syste
              and beisan vanos kit.

Leak down test is more useful than compression - if the head has never been rebuilt......its likely time.

Leakdown will also let you know the condition of rings; This points the difference between a head only refresh or a entire rebuild of bottom end as well. Many have made this mistake and put a fresh head on an oil burning bottom end.

measure bores when head is off also-

1995 s50b30 US loves to drop valve heads for some reason.

Check the camshaft bearing caps for scoring/wear; the S50 camshafts are not counter weighted like the M52/s52 units.
