I have read alot of mixed reviews regarding weight of oil used in a m50, some say synthetic others wont touch it with a 10 ft pole, what do you run and why? im looking at a 15w 40 for the summer, some are running 5w30. i live in new England, i know choice of weight depends on temp winter vs summer. but their don't seem to be to many options in a 15w 40 basically just diesel oil
what type of oil does everyone run? m50tu

I run regular dino oil in all of my m20/m30/m50/m52/s50/s52 cars, 20W50 in spring/summer/fall, 10W40 in the winter.
They all get regular oil/filter changes at 3-5K miles, except for the track car which I change once every 4 events.
M20/M30 get oil with high ZDDP content, M5X/S5X do not.1991 318i Alpine II - S50/5-lug swapped - track carOriginally posted by BillBraskyE36's are the Stephen Baldwin of the 3 series family. I asked the seasonal question myself, and the consensus was to use it year round. Certainly no need to step up from it in the summer, I had actually asked if I should consider a lighter weight or brand in the winter.
if you know for sure that the motor currently has dino oil and was consistently run on that, I would reconsider switching to synthetic. I've heard switching can create trouble, and you might be better off finding the best dino oil and keeping it consistent.Comment
