    S50 refresh before swap

Picking up my s50 this weekend and just was curious as to what you guys would refresh while the motor was out?

Was thinking valve cover/oil pan gasket, water pump, thermo.

    Thanks.

The care of the oil pump nut if you have the pan off. Everything under the manifold (fuel lines, CCV stuff, water hoses) are all easier out of the car. Replace any seals you see leaking...

i replaced my main and rod bearings, piston rings, honed/deglazed my cylidner walls, replaced EVERY gasket top end and bottom end, safety wired the oil pump nut, replaced all timing chains, guides, and tensioners figured since soon i was going to go FI i put arp head studs in and had my head rebuilt. this cost alot but atleast i have nothing to worry about for a very long time.

I replaced everydamnthing that I was able to...bearings, gaskets, seals rings, retainers, etc. The motor is out at the moment, got a new VAC oil pump and getting turbo prep ;-)

What's the production date and how many miles on the S50?

Early (pre-1/95) S50s had valve spring retainer issues, but can be upgraded pretty easily. If you're pulling the cams, check the lifters for any scoring and replace any that look worn (or replace them all, but they are pricey). Rebuilt VANOS is nice too, but you can just replace the seals if it isn't rattling. Chain-tensioner is a good "while your in there" maintenance item too. Safety wire or tack-welded oil pump nut is another "must do" as well. Other than that, what others listed sounds like a good start, but I wouldn't go too crazy.

IMO, Headgasket, timing chain, timing cover gaskets, rod bearings/main bearings, rehone, etc. are all overkill unless; A: the engine has an absurd amount of mileage; or B: there is an existing problem that warrants going over everything.
