    Piecing together an exhaust setup...

So a buddy of mine is building a custom exhaust a car I'm working on and I'm unsure of what kind of muffler to pick up.

Its a dual 2.25" system with an x-pipe and catalytic converters... Ideally the muffler should be dual in (2.25") and dual out.

I've seen a ton of the forum members recommend Borla, Vibrant and the dynomax mufflers but haven't come across any that have the 2.25" dual system.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-17552/overview/ - Are these any good?

    No recommendations for the muffler?

A single 3" is too big for an NA exhaust system, it will amplify the sound of the exhaust.

The dual setup is already built. Kinda don't want to start over again.

The selection of dual in and dual out mufflers is pretty limited... Should I find a single to a dual and then get a y?

the dynomax you selected should be fairly decent. it will add another x pipe in the system, wich will help to cancel even more drone and noise.

Do you mean a dual to single, then get a Y? Y tips are horrible, but I am in a similar dilemma with the lack of a muffler that fits my application.

                Yeh, thats the dilemma really...

Hmmm, whats the max length that can fit in there? Is this too long?

Magnaflow makes two reversable dual 2.25" to 3" mufflers. I have used both. The 14" #13278 was too loud for my taste and then I went with the 18" #12278 which is way quieter. these worked well on my s52 w/stock s52 headers some crappy and cheap Imco converters. This makes a pretty quiet and decent system for not too much money and worked with my 318is rear valance.

Kinda answered my own question re: muffler sizing. Looks like that dynomax will be too large to fit.

Slovik, thanks for that bit of info!! I'll check that out right now.

That's the rub, really. There aren't many good dual in/out mufflers out there. If you already have the piping fabricated, you might want to consider getting an aftermarket E30 catback, though the pipes are likely going to be dual 2.0".

A 3.0" exhaust won't be that loud, especially if you have something to tame low frequencies and higher raspy frequencies. Just get a reasonably sized rear muffler and a resonator.

I'm going to be going through this soon as well, is 2.25" the ideal size for a dual setup?

                        Early models do it better.

Do you have pics of measurement for the outside of the 2.25 tips? My calculation shows it to be a minimum of 6.25" outer tip edge to edge with nearly 2" in between.

The two 2.25" measure 6.75" outside to outside and have 1.5 " in between them. This is a picture of the small Magnaflow but they are the same in that respect. Hope that helps

That ain't a bad idea. Not sure if I can find something for this weekend though... I'll check bfc!
