my last car was swapped from an auto e36.. it has a separate ecu that runs the trans... you will have extra wires that can be cleaned up. but its not a big deal.

Will I need to have the trans computer plugged in for the engine to start? or will the engine just crank without touching the trans wiring?

Just throw out the transmission DME and wire it up like normal.

I've been searching around and a guy had a no crank concern and this is what he did:

                  "Problem: crank but no start

Solution: I had "drive-away protection" (pin 81 at the DME connector, pin 7 at the x20) connected to my e30 c101 "service indicator reset" (pin 11). This caused a no spark, no fuel situation. As soon as I cut pin 7 on my c101, it fired right up!

Also, in order to use the service indicator lights, I ran pin 11 on the c101 to pin 19 on the x20. Service lights fully function now!"

I got my engine from a auto car aswell. This was a main concern for me prior to doing my swap. However it turned out to not be a issue.

Do like stated above. Remove the transmission DME, and all associated wiring, and you shall have a running swap, with no issues.
