Do BMW diffs not have a crush sleeve used to set pinion backlash? If they do have one, if you pull the flange off, you need a new crush sleeve and will have to dial in the backlash again. It's not just a torque amount. You need to physically measure it with a dial indicator on the ring gear.

Good question. Anyone know? If so what backlash is used?

The pinion gear uses a crush sleeve to establish bearing preload. Pinion depth is set with a shim behind the pinion gear bearing race.
You do not need to dial in the backlash again. You merely need to get very close with the bearing preload (do it by feel or with a torque wrench). Remember you're dealing with worn-in bearings, so you SHOULD NOT use the drag torque spec for new bearings.

Finally going to make the move from a open e30 3.91 diff to the z3 3.07 torsen LSD as discussed!
I bought a 4 bolt e36 drive shaft and for fun a brand new e36 Guibo.
So. In the next few days I will be bolting up the e36 shaft to the zf tranny and the 4 bolt z3 diff. As far as I can tell the only "mod" needed will be the e30 csb on the e36 shaft! Woot!
