    540 6 speed gearbox - can it work on a s50?

Fallas, I found this 540 being parted out yesterday. I can score the gearbox and all associate parts for $300.00 has any one made this work on a S50 motor as I already have a complete motor & 5 speed for a swap. The 6 speed would be nice if it will work. This gearbox seem unique to the 540. I'm figuring I'd have to change the bell housing. any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

Sure. You have to cut off the bell housing and weld on a compatible one. There are only a few people in the country who can change the case, and they'd probably charge you for a full rebuild.

Net-net, for $300 you should buy it and resell and roll that into a transmission that you can actually use.

this. You want a transmission from a BMW small 6.

Good to know that there is an alternative instead of purchasing a S54 transmission. Ive read that a S54 is straight bolt on to a M/SX

The better alternative would be a ZF 6 speed from an E90+ 6 cylinder car. It will bolt up to a M5x, S54, M42, and so on.

I forgot to mention, it is available for around $650, not $1100 like an S54 transmission.
