What does this part do?

Upon reassembly yesterday I realized I'm missing part #11 in this picture, a thermostat.

I'm not sure what it does or where it connects. Might be obvious once I get one, but I just can't see it in anyone else's engine bay pics floating around, not sure if it's necessary when doing a conversion or not. Like I said, I have no idea what it's for, I've never seen a thermostat in line like that, it's obviously not the same one that is on the front of the motor.

From the routing, it looks like it controls at what tempature watter enters the throttle body heater assembly.

It plugs into the airbox on a e36.

It is bypassed when the engine is in a e30.

what does it take to bypass that? Can I just plug the line on the head and the throttle body and eliminate it completely? I'm not really sure I know how to bypass that part

ive always just run a line from the head to the t-body and from tbody to spider hose. its best to keep the tbody heated. if removed, (especially here in wisc.) you will build up frost on the tboly plate. this causes different tps/afm readings. cheers, jason

doesn't coolant come out of the barb in the head? Got a pic of what you did although I think I got it. Just curious to see how it's routed

yep. coolant comes from the head, to the t-body, out the t-body and to the "spyder" hose. see realoem link above. just bypass the airbox thermostat. sorry no pictures. cheers, jason

edit: dont forget to get the heater core lines correct. if you reverse the flow by switching lines, the heater core will not accept water over 2krpm......dont ask me how i know.

ok, just to make sure I'm not retarded, I'm taking the hose from the barb on the head and connecting it to the Throttle body on the left side. The middle throttle body connection goes to the spider hose, and the right connection gets plugged. Sound right Jason? Thanks again
