Can bad VANOS seals cause oil burning?

I've got a problem with burning oil in my m50tu. Only happens above 4200 rpm or so at full throttle. Can the oil used to actuate the VANOS leak into the head and get down into the cylinders? If it's just the VANOS seals I'll re do them but if it's the only other logical think I can think of (headgasket) or anything in the bottom end I'll just go bigger and better over the winter.

Also, if it is the VANOS, could I unplug the sylinoid and run it to see if it still smokes to test it?

No, it's not your VANOS causing the engine to burn oil.

OK. I've never had a VANOS unit off of a car to see how it really worked. I'm the kind of person that has to see something to really get it. Guess I'm going to re evaluate my engine plans and weigh the cost of something newer and more powerful against the cost, effort and results of rebuilding this m50.
