I've got some money saved up and want to do an m42 to s5x swap. Not sure yet if s50 or s52. But my plan is to find at least a decent stock one or a beat up motor that needs rebuilding. Not really planning to make it a fully built motor. Just rebuild it to stock. As for labor I've got two friends who do full on LS rebuilds and swaps who are willing to help a brother out. Obviously I need to find a motor to purchase (any places in mind where I could buy a decent one). And transmission wise, I'm a noob but would my m42 5 spd manual tranny link to an s50? And an estimate of how much this would all cost. Lastly, are these parts hard to find for a full swap? Thanks guys.

I did a pretty comprehensive refresh (rings, rod bearings, main bearings, all gaskets, any "wear items" I could think of and I am in a little over $3k for my swap. I also got a pretty killer deal on my engine after selling off the schricks that came with it. I have accumulated over $500 in unexpected expenses; it really is the little things that kill you. Swap parts aren't hard to find. There are a few vendors selling specialty swap mounts, as well as the option to use e28 mounts. Wiring adapters can be purchased if you would rather not wire the engine yourself (it's not that hard), and brake boosters/driveshafts if your stock one doesn't work can be picked up at a junkyard, and exhaust can be fabricated

g240 transmission from the M42 will bolt up fine, but it's debated wheather it will stand up to the extra power or not. Some have done it no problem, others have blown them up repeatedly behind a simple M50.For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!Originally posted by mbonanniI hate modded emtree, I hate modded cawrz, I hate jdm, I hate swag, I hate stanceyolokids, I hate bags (on cars), I hate stuff that is slowz, I hate tires.

buy a sub 150K mile s52. make sure to do a leakdown test, if it checks out, honestly just reseal it, new waterpump/thermostat, e34 oil pan and done.
your transmission will work, use the stock dual mass with a stock e36m clutch kit. they hold plenty of power. swap the differential for a s2.93 from a 325e or eS or an s3.15 from a z3. z4 shift lever.
akg swap mounts. iX booster. eta driveshaft. new fuel pump. keep your radiator. wire it yourself and get the obd2 DME flashed by any number of vendors.
it sounds so simple! i wonder why my car isn't done yet. :(

you're in California. they all seem to be over there!
scour car-part.com or lkq.com, as well as local junkyards/pick-a-parts and r3v's California/Western regional section. i'm sure someone in California wrecked their E36 M3 this week. :P
also, i was remiss in suggesting you get an eta driveshaft and changing diff ratios. if you're keeping your m42 transmission, your stock differential will work. you'll need a 325 driveshaft and e36 trans mounts. it would definitely be worth it to replace the guibo and center support bearing, as well as resealing the diff and getting a new mount.
also, you'll apparently want to source a 325 shifter carrier and linkage.Last edited by evandael; 07-29-2013, 05:25 PM.
