    OBD II M52 BAR legal?

    Hey guys,

I looked around but I couldn't come up with a straight answer. When running an OBD II M/S52 and have the it flashed to remove the EWS, can you still get it BARed?
Anyway, I'm determined to do a OBDII m52 (preferably b28 ) into my 86 ES because it is quite up there in miles and I want to keep her on the road :)

Before I begin gathering all the bits and pieces, I just want to make sure I have all my information straight. Thanks guys.

I know exactly what your saying, the write up's start by saying obd2 then magically obd1 comes into the mix from some little birds branch
hell idk sometimes you just have to wing it. JW

Technically the only way M52 swap is CA BAR legal is if you keep it OBD2 with all the components as it came out of the donor car.

Ok, but would flashing to remove the EWS somehow come into the picture there?

You can get an easy preliminary opinion on this or any other question from BAR. Go to the ref station you might use. Tell them what you're wanting to do. Take the vehicle specs. etc. Ask the ref. If he cant'/won't/ unsure of answer ask them for the name/phn # of the area Supervisor. Call them. None of this means the answers given will be cast in stone. It is not ...but he said..
There is no cost, no vehicle involved, no flags etc. If you get a crap answer
try another county.. different station / supervisor. Things can sometimes be interpreted differently.

They're not going to be able to tell that you removed the EWS.

They don't check for that. They only check emissions components. Like converters, air pump system, charcoal canister system, then DME has to show components as in ready state.
My DME flash shows fuel pressure leak system as good and passing without doing anything to the fuel tank, this saves a headache of installing fuel tank pressure sensor and making it all work with E30 tank.

Alright thanks guys, I think I'm getting the picture here.

And I think I read somewhere that in Cali you now need to have the OEM Cat as well? It seems like it would be easiest to purchase a whole e36 and just tear it down hah

No not OEM only. You can use replacement cats as long as they are spec'd for that yr of vehicle by mfg'r.. and meet CALIF/CARB certs.. I used Walker cats. car was Bar'd as 94 E36 a few months ago. Go to their web site converters upper left corner view Calif Carb section. have them install w/ part # down so ref can check application 'cause they will. take printed specs from web site with you to help with any questions. WTF do want an E36 for ? :p

Is the secondary air pump considered part of the emissions system?
