    E30 M50TU questions.

    Hey all,

So i have a 1989 325i with a M50TU swap. Specs are G260 trans (custom trans mount) with stock M20 shaved flywheel and stock clutch. The issue im having is i hear my engine making a ticking noise when i rev. At idle there is no ticking. Could this possibly be signs of a bad lifter? I also noticed that when the car is cold and i try to punch it a bit thru gear the driveline will make a slight clunking sound. I replaced the diff already and also replaced the flex disc. Could the CSB cause this noise and not give any vibration to the cabin of the vehicle? Thats the one thing i havnt replaced yet.

    Thanks in advance!!

I just had a thought of what the ticking could be. I have read vanos units will tick so maybe thats my issue?

A lifter is more likely to tick at idle due to lower oil pressure than while accelerating. Will it still tick if you pop the hood and rev it at the throttle body?

The clunking under hard acceleration could be the CSB...or subframe mounts.

I have no tick at idle. Only when i rev it up. Starting to think maybe loose spark plug so im gonna check them tonight. I havnt checked the subframe mounts or CSB out yet. I will be sure to do that soon. Thanks for the reply. Was starting to think the rattle is from the Getrag trans. I popped the hood open last night to check the vanos and its nice and quiet in that area. Thank god for that!!

Oil level is full and i use 20w50 so it should be plenty thick enough. Gonna check the spark plugs tonight.

Push the clutch in while you're revving it. Possible throw out bearing rattle? Does it sound like the noise is coming from the bay or from underneath the car?

And my CSB was bad before my swap and clunked inbetween shifts. I replaced it when I did my swap and all was well.

Im guessing it is the throw out bearing rattle. Also i can hear the CSB making a clunking noise when i punch it thru gear. Harder the load the louder the clunk. Sound is coming right from where the CSB is located. The ticking noise seems like its coming from the bottom end of the block/trans area so im thinking bad throw out bearing. Spark plugs are nice and tight. Next in line is replacing all the belts and tensioners with new waterpump and CSB. Hopefully that helps alot.
