    O2 Sensors

Sorry gang, I didn't see any thread on O2 sensors.

My question is, after doing a swap did anyone do without the sensors?

    Can you?

    Thanks!

You can (as mine is dead and the engine still runs), but I'm sure it's messing with perfecting the ecu map.

Well. When i was getting my exhaust made, i found out my 02 sensor wires had been cut, so i have never had one. I just didnt ask for a new bung for my sensor and said fuck it. Car runs fine, but im sure it wouldnt hurt having one.

With no 02 sensor, the engine will run in open loop at all times, which means that it runs on a default fuel map. Normally this means a very rich mixture, which in turn means shit gas mileage and no chance of passing any emissions test.

Besides running rich, will there be any significant power loss?

          Thanks!

I believe that the O2 sensor is ignored at WOT, so no, there shouldn't be any power loss. If you run the engine long enough without the oxygen sensor though, the unburnt fuel will ruin your cat(assuming you have one).

i believe you will build up a ton of carbon in your engine too from running so rich, if you do more research you will find there are plenty of good reasons to run an oxygen sensor and really no good reasons not to run it.

You ought to consider reinstalling the O2 sensor sooner than later.

got mine hooked up , due to the rough idle and everytime i diagnose the engine on the GT1.

after that power is smooth and engine's idle nicely.

Can it cause misfires/backfires when NOT in wide open throttle?

yep. Don't try to rn your car without a 02 sensor, it is as important as the pistons!

How do i know if my O2 sensor is properly working. Is there any way to diagnose the car or ECU to know if it's workign properly? any tricks?

Not to be flip, but hypothetically (sp?) if you think your motor runs rich and idles like crap, unplug the sensor - if it runs the same your sensor is roached, if it runs even worse than when plugged in your have deeper issues.

That was how I decided to change O2 sensors back in my GTI (dub) days - always worked then. On my swap I just bucked up for a new one - so IDK what to tell you. YRMV.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

Just make sure the signal wires line up and everything and I don't see a reason it wouldn't work.
