The timing chain is tight like it should be I checked that already. And I was wondering if it could also be the water pump. I will check that tomorrow and let your guys know. Thank you.

Sorry for the thread jack, but my brothers car is having a similar sound. If anyone knows exactly what it is that'd be awesome. I've already taken vanos unit off to instal seals. Chains and chain guides seem to be in good shape. Thanks a lot :)

It is all good. All the help we can get to figure this out. And that is exactly what my engine is doing. So you said you have already did the vanos system and it did no Change anything Bimmian?? I am going to test my water pump later today and see what happens.
        What oil are you running?

Could be a stamped metal or plastic impeller on the water pump and it has broken off. Now it's just bouncing around inside the housing.

I just pulled my belt off and started the car to check the water pump. And it still made the sound just not as bad. So i am not sure if it is the water pump. should i just pull my water pump and check before i dig into my vanos system?? also i have notice it only happens when the car is warmed up. when it is could it is much better. i mean i can still hear it just not as much. i am running 5-30 oil could that cause it??

Bust out a long screwdriver and put your ear to the handle and start touching different areas, that's the ghetto stethoscope, works for me pretty damn good to isolate engine noises...

Just did the screw driver idea and my sound is definitely coming from my vanos system. So this might a far fetched idea but could this be because I am running 5-30 oil which is not getting my oil pressure up high enough so my vanos is acting up. i should be running like 10-40 0r 20-50. which oil should i try next???

I run 20w-50 in my vanos M50 and have no problems. Slight lifter rattle at start-up if it has been sitting over night, but it goes away with 5 seconds.

That much noise though likely mean something is broken. I can't imagine what would make the vanos sound like that unless something was broken. It really is a simple system with very little to go wrong.

Nick Hayden, yes well my brother did the bearing a while back and were thinking the seals got jacked in the process. The new seals should be here Friday. Here is the link

Yea i agree something is defiantly broken. I did some more investigation and when i put my hand over the vanos unit is feels like something is rattling around in there. So I am going to give dr vanos a call. Also i drove it a little today and it really only happens when i push the clutch in and the rpms drop. When i am under acceleration there is no sound what so ever.

did you ever pull the valve cover off to check around? Look at upper tensioner, etc?
