    Vanos Rebuild sketchiness

To lock the Cams or not. I've seen quite a bit of both arguments, but I would like to hear it from someone who has actually done the rebuild without locking the timing.

I could make the tools I suppose.

I have single vanos and am rebuilding with the Biesan Systems kit.

    Thanks.

I just did this a few weeks ago. I did lock my cams, but I did not lock the flywheel. This shows it on an M42, but the same could be done on an M/S50/2:

Replacing the vanos seals is not nearly as difficult or "scary" as most people claim. When I did it, everything was very easy and went back together smoothly. You don't need the cam sprocket wrench either, you can turn it by hand.

I made this cam lock tool:

You can find a drawing for it that I made here:

Thanks man. I had found your plans for the locking tool a couple of weeks ago. Looks like I'll be making one this weekend and getting this done.

Get the entire tool set; it's ~$120.

I've never been able to move the vanos sproketry items properly without the specific tools; never wanted to either.

Worth every penny to save your time/sanity and potentially some valves; if you spend money to have the cylinder head built it may be important (I don't do things the r3v way)

Works every time for me; never had a timing mistake yet

Bmw designed the cylinder head to be assembled with specific tools; it's not smart to have an argument with bmw over engine assembly procedure; people try to assemble the s54 with no proper tools and that is just an epic joke

Sacked up on this project finally.

I bought the tools from Baum and it came out to be closer to 300. Price increase?

Regardless, they made the procedure effortless. The only trouble, if you can call it that, I had was pulling the nut off of the vanos piston.

Nothing my girl with a heat gun couldn't remedy. ;)

I honestly cannot believe the amazing difference this repair made for my car. It's like a completely different machine.

          Here's to my pounding heart.

how many miles did you have on the clock before the rebuild?
Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

I have around 253k on the chassis itself. The motor was built from new parts and put in roughly 70k ago. If the PO's were honest.

I will say, it's incredibly clean.

Damn, wish I had known that. Oh well, the Baums are at least high quality and I know that.

Side note, one thing to watch out for is, if you do need the anti rattle kit, heat the nut on the piston before even attempting to turn it. It is a bitch.
