Pulled the harness off my s52

ok so i just took the wiring harness off my engine because its from an automatic 98 m3 so I'm assuming i have to basically get rid of all the crap auto transmission related then i gotta put on the c101 ect. i know the ETM is my friend and i will be pouring over it figuring this shit out. i just want to know if anyone who's gone through the process already can just give me pointers. I've read many threads so i have a good idea but will still have noob questions so forgive me in advance

ok so from what i understand i should start from the auto comp and start tracing and removing wires from there?

should i tear all the shrink wrap and covering off and go to town?

i have no idea where half these connectors go will i be able to determine that from the ETM? or should i just google pictures?

Tear covering off it is easier to trace wires. Go slow and double check, then check again that you are cutting the correct wire. The ETM will tell you what wires are at what connector, use masking tape to label them once you figure them out, it will save you a lot of time on the install. If your not sure on anything, don't cut it and ask us.

Im in the middle of this as well. I have a manual '99 M3 harness. I thought I was done modifying, but Im not, hopefully I will be soon. I need to wire up my coolant temp sensor for the cluster, and my oil level sensor in the E34 pan. The other modifications I did, I used the AKG and other pinouts. My colors didnt match and I didnt trust it, so I looked over the ETMs for both cars. It was easy for the E36 because the PDF was searchable (I searched for X20 and it showed me every x20 connection, color and pin number). It was a lot harder for the E30 because the PDF looked scanned, and it couldn't be searched. When I finish, Ill help out as much as possible.

Not to steal the thread, but do I also need to unplug the Orange/Red Relay for the SAP. Ive heard that if it is not unplugged that it will burn the harness due to a 12v to ground. Also, DO I need to unplug the socket a well, or just the relay, or does it matter? Hopefully that will help OP as well.

I'm keeping OBDII and deleting SAP and rear O2s, just FYI.

Ok so i started messing with the harness im assuming this is the connector for the transmission

If thats correct im about to cut it off nd pull it out

And how do i tell which one is which? The one with more contacts is the x20?

Wiring diagrams will tell you everything you need to know. Start with the x6001(?), the big plug that connects to the ecu and trace everything from there if you're not sure.

Ok well i have a quesstion whats the differnce between the egs 270r and the 310z how can i tell which one i have the pinout for the 270 has like pins 187-266 and i dont even see thos pin numbers anywhere while the 310z have like 11-88 thats the only problem in having reading the diagram

EDIT: ok ive done some reading im certian the M had the 310z because it is an a5s meaning it had 5 gears where as the 270r is an a4s meaning it only had 4 gears so it was probly installed in a regular 3 series

Ok well started cutting wires! The blue colored pins have nothing in them

Pin 1 on what connector? All I see is a pic of pin 89 in a Bentley manual or something. I don't see a connector.

Removing the auto stuff is really easy. You don't need any wiring diagrams to do it. Once you open the big E36 harness box, it will be self explanatory what you can remove. You'll be left with a couple (or three? I forget) wires what go to the ECU, I just taped them off.
