well I still have my e30 m50 fun to drift in but is now my dd. I bought a 95 e36 m3 shell from a friend in town for 400 dollars super straight no rust clean interior so on an so forth. only thing is it had no motor or tranny. while out at my local car parts thrift store (junk yard) getting some things for my girlfriends 01 m5 (stones will tear up your headlights and fogs) I ran across a 00 5series with a dinan badge not reading to far into that just yet. it has the m52 2.8 with a zf transmission. my question is would it be worth converting this to obd1 and putting it in the m3 or leaving it obd2? I don't have the money to replace the s50 that was originally in there because I have invested money into turbo things I was gonna put on my e30 but am now going to put on this car.

I actually did that. But you would probably better of getting ( 1996-1998 )M52 and slap it in there, I don't think you should bother with dual vanos if you are on small budget.

You want us to give you opinion but you don't even know what you want to put in. You 'called' the junk yard and they got a 2000 or 1998 five something, and you get there and it is 1988 , very typical. How do you know the engine is even good, you will just trust the junkyard? Then after all of this, you say I want to put a turbo on it, this is when I lose interest in giving opinionComment

^^ lol.
If you are going to go turbo, find out a power level that you want to make and then design around that. I'm not sure how familiar you are with turbos (I'm not very knowledgeable with turbo systems), but you should read and research for months before going with any FI. Corky Bell's Maximum Boost is a good place to start, but i hear some of his points are rather subjective. It will teach you the basics anyway, at the very least.
As for my opinions with the engine, I would go with a stock S52, and retain most of the OBDII, as I'm doing now. It doesn't make crazy power, but I have a feeling it will be fun enough for me. If I was going to turbo, I would probably go with a M50 and stroke it to 2.8 and go from there. I'm going on hearsay though.
I think the first thing you need to decide is what you want from the car. Then decide what you want to do to it. If its just something to do as a learning experience, just go for it on the junkyard motor. You can learn anything and make anything work.Comment

Desert... the m52 only comes in a single vanos.... the m54 is a dual vanos.... and they have documentation of the motor running when they picked it up two weeks Ago. Also the jy that i will be getting the motor from has a 30 day warranty. Before i pull the motor out i will be running a compression test... so i dont waste my time... and will also be doing cometic headgasket arp headstuds and all new bearings.
Poeman thank you for the input as well i plan on making around the 400 mark and have done tons of research because i was gonna boost my e30 m50 swap.Comment
