    M50 Preparation : M50B20 before B25?

Okay, so a friend has a customer who's throwing a hemi into his E36 so his M50B20 is going to be thrown out as scrap.

I could pick this up for $50 or so.

The question I have is all the mountings / electrics the same on the B20 and the B25? As in the future I'd like to fit a B25 but I don't have the funds to grab a ZF + B25 + LSD all in one go.

I'd grab this B20 + a ZF box and get it all fitting in the car nicely and use that until I can afford a B25 and then swap it out over one weekend and avoid all the niggles.

    Car it'd be going into is a 1989 E30 320i with a G240 (on it's last legs, hence wanting a ZF).

I'm sure the electronics are different, but I truly don't know.

The b20 has less power than an M20.. Honestly, wait and do it right the first time. All the downtime getting the b20 swap working might as well just be used to get a b25 in the car.

Get the trans (assuming it will work for the b25) and then you have less to get later.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

From my limited research, it looks as if the electrics are the same. The m50b20 has 150hp and the m20b20 has a 120hp so itd be a good bump in power.

If the mountings are the same / electrics are the same then then I'll still be sticking the B20 in.

Can somebody confirm they're at least very similar?

I had an m50b20 non vanos in my e30, then swapped it to an m52b28 and used the m50b20 harness, Of course there is no working vanos, but everything works fine, I also have a m50b25 intake on it which helped, I'm even using the b20 throttle body lol. If you are going to turbo it then the b20 is good under boost, I was quite surprised. I just had a holset h1c and e85 with a fekzen.se chip.

But yes b20 and b25 are basically the same. b20 has smaller intake runners, throttle body and afm.

As iViLe said. They are the same block. Different internals and head. I'm running a B20 in my 325i E36 since it was a free motor. It'll work just fine. It's a 150 ps motor instead of the B25 192 ps. I'm running B25 harness maf and injectors. Been running good for the past 2 years

The engine I was going to pick up turned out to be a dud, was backfiring back out the intake and wouldn't fire at all (according to the owner, he bought it off somebody who thought it was the starter motor, he's now sticking a v8 in it). The guy said it just happened one day, nobody was messing around witht he engine or anything.
