    e30 M3 M50 Swap

    Hello,
    im new on here:)
I recently bought a 1989 M3 with M50 swap. im trying to make it street legal. when I bought the car it had multiple vacuum leaks, so I took it to a very knowledgeable BMW enthusiast that did some diagnoses, it turned out to be the brake booster o-ring was missing, dipstick o-ring at the pan and the breather hose were bad. After replacing the O-rings he took it for a 30 min test drive and it threw a fault for tank ventilation valve, so he went ahead and replaced the tank vent valve. now the check engine light is gone. I can smell the fumes out of exhaust, I think its running Rich and im not sure where to go from here. help? BTW 02 sensor has just been replaced. also since the car has a stock air intake tube and stock MAFS but the filter is spectra brand is that going to fail the visual smog inspection?

    Thanks
    Have a great day8)

Yes its up to the smog tech but they will fail you for the aftermarket air filter without a C.A.R.B certs sticker. If you get the car finished and pass the B.A.R inspection then you can use any aftermarket air filter and not fail visual inspection. As far as emissions i would guess you have a clogged cat or a failed one at the least. Smelling fumes in the car is a indicator that you have exhaust leaks or clogged cats. Have you checked your spark plugs or ignition coils?

Thanks for the reply. so I went to the B.A.R and did the inspection. unfortunately it failed. for 3 different reasons 1: air intake without C.A.R.B sticker 2: stored knock sensor codes (no check engine light). 3: high nox. so when I got home I replaced the knock sensors(they were completely destroyed, falling apart) and spark plugs were done. so I replaced with NGK spark plugs. now Im not sure If I have to replace the catalytic converter. I have the stock air intake but it wont fit, not enough room any recommendations?

btw glnr13 its really legit. ill post some pictures

Here is a cool idea you can try. Stock m20 e30 airbox
          Modified to fit the maf

Where in Los Gatos are you? I'd be happy to come help out once my cars running. Did you have an open cone filter? I've heard of people passing bar with those. Plugs may help nox but my guess is that it's more likely to either be it running rich or your cats. Does it still smell rich? Is engine management all stock?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

I like that set up. it fits right in. The box looks a little small though. Does it function just as good as the Stock M50 air box?

Here is an update on my second BAR station inspection visit, but before we get there, let me tell you what I did prior. I had a muffler shop install a new catalytic converter with new o2 sensor, replaced both ks#1 and ks#2 with bosch brand, new NGK platinum spark plugs, gave it an oil change, after all that work done I had a buddy of mine do a presmog test just to be certain, the results came out good, no codes stored. So in the morning I had to unplug the MAFS to be able to squeeze the huge Stock M50 air box and plugged it right back in, (I went in with the hood open since the air box didn't fit in all the way) any ways, the tech ran the car on the dyno for smog and it passed the visual and emission inspection, all the sudden he brings a fancy OBDI code reader, he pulled out two stored codes 1. Code 69 for knock sensor2, 2. code 41 mass air flow (just enough to fail)
I did some research on code 69 ks#2 and didn't find detailed information. At this point im beyond frustrated lol it's been a pain in the a$$. I need your help please!
