m52 with m50nv pan: which windage tray: final answer...

Mods can you delete the other post please. Accidental dbl. Stupid phone.

So earlier tonight i was at the shop and i pulled my oil pan and the one of an m50nv that was in storage. I remember reading about the windage tray but figured id look. I also posted the question on facebook. The guy who replied suggested cutting the tray out of the e34 pan and using the m52 tray. Most other threads i found said use the e34 tray and ditch the m52 tray also same with m50/s50/s52. Well the obvious easy choice was to first unbolt the one from the m52 and try the e34 one. I did that and one of the scraper arms hit the side of the block where the oil return bulges out just enough so the bolts would not line up. The bracket was broke off btw. So like any good redneck i took a cutoff wheel and cut the corner off of the e34 scraper/tray bit. About 1cm triangles worth. It then lined up and sat flat. Put a few bolts in and turned it by hand about ten times. Heard nothing. Took it and inspected and didnt see any marks.

Anyway thats where im at. I forgot to order the oil pump pickup tube gasket and they are backordered from worldpac so hopefully the dealer price isnt terrible and they have it.

My question is before i commit....what is your actual experience?

    What tray did you use?

Did you use an e34 pan and have clearance issues with the block? Counterweights?

You can see in this pic where the middle scraper thing was hitting against the bulge for the block.

My block (m52b28 iron) seems to have a reinforcement next to the oil return there.

So I notched it here. I think I will go back and cut them all down about 2mm across so there is no chance of rubbing the block any.

I should add the idea is that if the e34 tray really is the way to go id rather not mutilate the pan taking it out.

Are you talking about the oil pan baffle/Crank scraper thing?

        This is how mine looks:

        It's from a E34. I'm using a S52 crankshaft to stroke the M50NV to 3 litres and it doesn't rub on anything.

I just ran into this problem with my S52. If your e34 oil pan has a separate baffle, use the baffle that belongs to your engine. In your case, you'd want to use the m52 baffle that was originally on your engine. If you have an e34 oil pan with the built in baffle that should work fine.

Ahh yeah i see. You had an e34 pan from a single vanos car. I believe those have the tray bolted into the block same as the rest of m50/m52/s motors with vanos. The nv doesnt have that one. The tray is riveted into the pan. I am planning on running the nv pan with its built in tray/baffle.
